Volunteer of the Month: December 2016
Every month, Animal Care & Control features a volunteer who's making a difference for the animals at the shelter.
Meet the December Volunteer of the Month, Dali.
How long have you volunteered with the City of Fort Worth Animal Shelter?
It will be six months officially this month!
Why did you decide to start volunteering with us?
I have always been an animal lover and animals have a special place in my heart. I would go to the PetSmart Hulen location and always look at the dogs and talk to them. I wanted to make a difference and volunteering has given me that opportunity.
What is your favorite volunteer activity to help with?
I usually volunteer at the PetSmart Hulen Adoption Center, and I love to take every dog out in the play area and just let them run and get comfortable. I always bring treats with me, and I try to work with them on basic commands. We play with toys. From that interaction, I learn a lot about their personality, what they like or dislike.
What is the strangest animal you have seen at the shelter?
I don’t remember seeing anything strange.
What is your fondest memory from volunteering at the shelter?
It is my happy place and I truly love it. It is wonderful to meet staff and other volunteers like myself that care and want what’s best for these precious animals. I also made a lot friends while volunteering. It makes me happy to talk to potential adopters and to educate. It is my passion.
Do you have any pets at home?
Of course, we do! We have six dogs: Atilla, a 5-year-old male Akita Rottweiler; Lana, a 5-year-old female chocolate lab, Gracie, a 4-year-old female Pitbull/German Shepherd that I bottle fed; Medo, a 13-year-old male small poodle; Bella, a 1 ½-year-old female Beagle mix; and Buddy, a 1-year-old male Pitbull. We are also currently fostering one of our favorite dogs from the shelter, Jenna. Two cats, Alice (adopted from Fort Worth Shelter) and Kitty, two guinea pigs Coco and Diamond, one bunny Maggie, one pigeon Charlie, six chickens and four ducks.
