Terri Owens

Every month, Animal Care & Control features a volunteer who's making a difference for the animals at the shelter.

Meet the November Volunteer of the Month, Terri Owens.

How long have you volunteered with the City of Fort Worth Animal Shelter?

Volunteering at the shelter since June 2018.

What qualities make a good volunteer?

Compassion, commitment, patience and loving animals. Always be up for a challenge.

Why did you decide to start volunteering with the Fort Worth Animal Shelter?

I decided to start volunteering with the shelter when I retired because I had more free time. I have always been an animal lover and now I can help make a difference. Also, it is very rewarding.

What are the social benefits of volunteering?

Making new friends and interacting with adopters to help them find a good match for their family. Also the socialization of the dogs.

What is your favorite volunteer activity to help with and why?

I like to help with the mobile adoption events, and talking with people. I like to learn the personalities of the dogs and passing out treats and talking to them and being their ambassador to finding a match for their forever home.

What do you do for fun when you’re not volunteering?

I like to go to estate sales, go to the casinos and play the slot machines, go to the movies and working in the yard tending to plants or house projects like painting.

What makes you laugh?

Spending time with family and friends and playing catch with my dog for hours.

Do you have any pets at home?

I have one blue heeler named Toby that is 8 years old and has to be the only dog. I also have 3 cats.

What advice would you give to volunteers who have just started out?

Team up with someone and have fun. If you volunteer at the main shelter, learn the shelter and don’t get overwhelmed. There will be sad and stressful days but don’t give up. Please come back and get to know the animals to help them find their forever homes. Find what you like to do and where you can fit in. Ask questions, the staff is wonderful and helpful. You make a difference every time you go.
