Justice Department approves Fort Worth redistricting plan

The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the redistricting plan Fort Worth submitted earlier this year. The city will hold its first election using the new council districts in May 2013.

The approved district map can be viewed online.

“Ensuring fair and equitable representation for all of Fort Worth always was our main goal in this process,” said Mayor Betsy Price. “We are pleased that the attorney general did not object to the City Council-approved redistricting plan.”

The 2010 Census revealed Fort Worth’s population grew by more than 200,000 people to make it the fastest-growing large city in the United States. The population boom was concentrated largely in three districts — District 2 with 121 percent growth, and Districts 6 and 7, both with roughly 50 percent growth.
