The T board approves new type of TEX Rail vehicle
Posted Dec. 18, 2012

The T’s most recent cost analysis shows the additional costs for the diesel multiple-unit vehicles will be more than offset by lower operating costs.
The T board has approved a change in the type of TEX Rail vehicle recommended for startup. While the preferred vehicle is more expensive, The T believes the purchase price will be offset by lower operating costs.
The T initially specified locomotive-hauled coaches (LHC), but the proposed change calls for diesel multiple-unit (DMU) vehicles.
Major benefits of DMUs for TEX Rail:
- Lower operating cost.
- Partial funding from TxDOT and the Regional Transportation Council is available for the DMU.
- The DMU will be better received by neighborhoods along the corridor due to its lower profile.
Capital cost for the DMUs for TEX Rail is estimated at $88 million for eight train sets, which is about $20 million more than the LHC. The DMU operating expense is projected to be approximately $4 million per year less than for the LHC vehicle.
TEX Rail, formerly known as the Southwest-to-Northeast Rail Corridor, will carry passengers from southwest Fort Worth, through downtown, on to Grapevine and into the north end of DFW Airport.
