Fort Worth Flashback: Main Street underpass provided north-south thoroughfare
Work on the Main Street underpass began early in the Depression. Its progress is shown in this May 1931 photo.
The Main Street underpass created an east-west route for railroad cars overhead and a way for automobiles to travel beneath the rail lines from north to south.
Construction was also ongoing in that same period on the neighboring Texas & Pacific Passenger Terminal and the Texas & Pacific Warehouse. In 1933, work began on the beaux-arts/classical revival post office building on Lancaster Avenue, whose location next to the rail station provided easy access to mail trains and gave the city a bustling corridor.
The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
