Fort Worth Flashback: Symphony has been making beautiful music since 1912

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra celebrates its Centennial Season this year, with several special events and programming.

This photo shows the orchestra during its 1957-58 season.

The first performance of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra was in May 1912, with C.D. Lusk conducting and Brooks Morris as concertmaster. Morris would later play a crucial role as re-founder and music director.

In fits and starts over the years, through interruptions caused by both world wars, that ensemble evolved into today’s world-class Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

The City of Fort Worth proclaimed May Fort Worth Symphony Month.

A short documentary film will debut at an August concert, and a commemorative magazine will be published in the fall. In addition, the symphony will present a world premiere piece dedicated to the centennial by composer Jimmy López.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
