Fort Worth Flashback: Test your knowledge of late-50s Fort Worth geography

How many landmark buildings can you identify in this 1958 photo? The aerial photo was taken looking east along I-30 from approximately the Forest Park Boulevard exit.

  1. St. Paul Lutheran Church. The growing church relocated from May Street to 1800 West Freeway in 1954.
  2. Mrs. Baird’s bakery. The Fort Worth company became the largest independent, family-owned bakery in the country.
  3. Masonic Temple, 1100 Henderson St. The building was completed in 1932.
  4. Medical Arts Building, west of Burnett Plaza. Imploded in 1973 to make way for new construction.
  5. Continental National Bank Building. What was once the world’s largest revolving clock sat atop the building.
  6. Bewley Mills at the east end of Ninth Street. E.E. Bewley was a leader in Fort Worth’s development as a major grain distribution and processing center.
  7. T&P Warehouse, at the southwest corner of West Lancaster Avenue and Jennings Street, was completed in 1931 in the Zigzag Moderne style.
  8. U.S. Post Office, 251 W. Lancaster Ave., was built in 1933. The classical column capitals feature Texas longhorn and Hereford cattle.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
