In honor of _ _Women’s History Month_, each week in March Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of women in our city’s history._

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908. There were nine founders who took advantage of their privileged position as college-educated women of color to make their college experiences as meaningful and productive as possible.

The Fort Worth chapter, Beta Mu Omega, was the dream of 13 women who chartered the chapter on May 2, 1936, at the home of Ethel Brackeen Long.

Since its inception, Beta Mu Omega has provided numerous humanitarian services, volunteer hours and financial contributions for the betterment of Fort Worth. Projects have included Red Cross donations, relief efforts after hurricanes Katrina and Rita, health screenings, Ronald McDonald House, McDonald Branch YMCA, United Negro College Fund, Mayfest, NAACP and others.

For more than 30 years, the High School Seniors Recognition Program has provided college-bound senior students with scholarships and cash rewards totaling more than $320,000.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
