Fort Worth Flashback: Take a look at early city records

Posted March 31, 2013

The Library Archives will feature an exhibit beginning April 2 showcasing records of the City of Fort Worth. The exhibit will be in the East Wing of Fort Worth Central Library, 500 W. Third St.

Most of Fort Worth’s early records were destroyed in an 1876 courthouse fire. The earliest records the library has are mayor and council proceedings starting in 1895. However, there are a few pre-1895 records: some bond books starting in 1873 through the 1890s; s a small amount of correspondence from the 1880s; and records of the Fort Worth Fire Department dated 1883-1893.

Other records of interest: maps showing the development of early Fort Worth neighborhoods beginning around 1900; records relating to the history of mass transit in Fort Worth from the 1870s to the 1970s; ledger books with property and poll tax records in the early part of the 20th century. There is also a small collection of photographs of Fort Worth street scenes.

In 1997, the Fort Worth Library was designated the official repository for historical records of the City of Fort Worth and will continue to receive historically significant records from all city departments as they become available.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
