Fort Worth Flashback: Betty Randels was child advocate

Posted March 11, 2014

[Betty Randels]

In honor of Women’s History Month, each week in March Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of women leaders in our city’s history.

Betty Randels (1915-2009) was instrumental in the construction of a juvenile detention center for Tarrant County.

Born and educated in Wichita, Kan., Betty Brooks married Paul Wayne Randels in 1937. The Randels moved to Fort Worth in 1945. Mrs. Randels’ interests included local, state and national child advocacy. Before her involvement, young people and adult offenders were housed in cells together.

She served on various committees and with civic organizations related to child and youth services, including the League of Women Voters, Tarrant County Child Care ’76 and the Tarrant County Child Welfare Board. She spent countless hours volunteering with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Campfire Girls, PTA and teaching Sunday School.

This photograph shows Mrs. Randels, right, receiving the First Lady of Fort Worth, Altrusa Civic Award for 1970.
