Fort Worth Flashback: YWCA an early advocate for Fort Worth women

Posted March 26, 2014

In honor of Women’s History Month, each week in March Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of women leaders in our city’s history.

On Aug. 2, 1907, the YWCA Fort Worth became the first YWCA in Texas.

Early programs included housing, a cafeteria and an employment bureau to help women find jobs. In 1946, YWCA Fort Worth adopted an Interracial Charter, and in 1968, merged the downtown YWCA with the Highland Park YWCA, which served African-American women in Fort Worth.

This image shows the front cover to a program from the 60th annual YWCA meeting for Tarrant County and Fort Worth. The event was held at the Fort Worth Club on Jan. 19, 1967.
