Fort Worth Flashback: Mind newspaper covered local, national, international news

Posted Feb. 22, 2015

In honor of Black History Month, each week in February Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of African-American institutions in our city’s history.

The Fort Worth Mind, published by Southwestern Negro Press, was a weekly newspaper that originated in Fort Worth in 1932.

Here is the front page of the Jan. 13, 1934, issue.

Fort Worth Mind

The Fort Worth Mind included local, national and international news pertaining to the African-American community. The newspaper credited itself as being “Fort Worth’s Largest Circulated Negro Newspaper” and had the motto of “Fearless and Independent: A Champion of Race Development.”

During the 1930s, issues of the paper included an insert of the Gravure Weekly, which described itself as “the First National Rotogravure ever published by Negroes Anywhere” and was published by Scott Newspaper Syndicate.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
