Fort Worth Flashback: Second City Hall

Posted April 20, 2015

old city hall

In 1892, the City of Fort Worth began planning a new city hall to replace the first city hall, which was at Second and Commerce streets.

This second city hall was designed by Architect Alonzo N. Dawson (1854-1923), who defeated well-known Texas architects J. Riely Gordon and Messer, Sanguinet and Messer in a design competition. The hall was built by the construction firm Smith & Bardon.

The building, completed in 1893, was at 10th and Throckmorton streets.

The massive three-story building featured Romanesque stone walls, Spanish tile roofs and a monumental tower rising to the height of seven stories.

It was demolished in 1937 to make way for a new city hall. The A.D. Marshall Public Safety and Courts Building is now at this site.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
