Jim Wright, a native of Fort Worth, was a Democrat who served 34 years in the U.S. House.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1947-1949. He was elected to Congress in 1954 and held the position until he resigned in 1989 after an investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

When Lyndon Johnson left his Texas Senate seat to become vice president in 1961, Wright jumped into the race to succeed him, the first entry in a political field of 71. He came in third, barely missing the runoff that Republican John Tower went on to win.

This photo shows a campaign rally in preparation for the 1961 Senate run. Wright is at top center.

Wright retired to Fort Worth, where he wrote several books and taught a government class at TCU.

Wright, 92, died on May 6.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County.
