In honor of Black History Month, each week in February Fort Worth Flashback will take a look at the role of African-American residents and institutions in our city’s history.

Lobis Bryant (L.B.) Adams was born in Henderson, Texas, in 1907. He graduated from Fort Worth Colored High School (later I.M. Terrell) and went on to graduate from Bishop College in Marshall before attending Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.

Adams taught school for many years in Sweetwater and El Paso. He entered the ministry in 1938 and preached at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Fort Worth; he was ordained in 1940.

Adams was pastor of many churches throughout Texas and New Mexico until arriving at Corinth Baptist Church in Fort Worth, where he was pastor for more than 33 years.

He was married for 50 years to Fern Crutchfield, who influenced him to become a full-time pastor. After her death, Adams married Alice JoAnn Anderson Williams on Feb. 12, 1983. They were married for 13 years until her death.

This circa-1960s photo shows L.B. and Fern Adams.

L.B. Adams died Sept. 13, 2006.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County.
