Fox Photo Collection depicts life in 1930s and beyond

Lewis D. Fox, a Fort Worth photographer, visited the “charming frozen alive girl” stage at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The girls, clad in bikinis, were encased in coffins of ice.

A smaller version of the frozen slabs is displayed on the stage in the photo. The women prepared for the stunt by standing under a cold shower. Their bodies shook violently while lying in the ice and the girls often suffered from ice burns. Paramedics were on hand in case of emergencies.

Fox and his wife traveled extensively around the country and photographed the places they visited. He took pictures in most of the major cities in the United States, but he focused a great deal on Fort Worth and its local culture. For example, there is an entire album dedicated to the Fort Worth Frontier Centennial and the birth of Casa Mañana in 1936. Other subjects covered in the Fox albums include the Stock Show, parades, rodeos, baseball, racing, cinema, stage productions, Rotary Club conferences and numerous road trips to a variety of locations.

Additional photos from this collection are available in the Fox Photograph Digital Collection.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
