Mary Daggett Lake (1881-1955) was the daughter of E. M. (Bud) Daggett, who was the son of C.B. Daggett. C.B. Daggett was the brother of E. M. Daggett, who was known as the Father of Fort Worth.

She was born in Fort Worth and attended public schools until she enrolled in Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. On March 23, 1899, she married Will F. Lake, a local cattleman. Her principal interests were gardening and local history. She was the garden page editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and a charter member of the Fort Worth Garden Club.

She was also very involved with local history. She wrote a series of articles in the 1920s on the first 100 families in Fort Worth and collected materials about Fort Worth.

In this photo from the Mary Daggett Lake Papers, Mrs. F.N. Dickerson set a new time record (55 minutes) when she caught a 363-pound black sea bass at Catalina Island on July 29, 1901.

More historic photos are available in the library’s digital archives. The library purchased the collection from the heirs of Mrs. Lake in 1956 for $2,000.

The Fort Worth Library has approximately 10,000 items pertaining to the history of Fort Worth and Tarrant County. These items include city and county government documents, newspapers, directories, cemetery association records, maps as well as popular and scholarly books written by local authors or about local subjects.
