Message from Councilmember Hicks

Posted Dec. 2, 2011

I wanted to take the time to make sure you heard from me that I remain committed to carrying out my City Council obligations with the same sense of duty I brought to the job back in 2005. Fortunately, the Fort Worth City Charter contains provisions that ensure the residents of District 8 won't go unrepresented in cases like this. Yes, with my political announcement, I have effectively forfeited my City Council seat. However, the City Charter allows me to continue our work for District 8 up and until a new representative is sworn in. This is my community, it's my passion, and I remain committed to you and our neighborhoods. Nothing has changed, and we encourage you to continue to stay in touch with our District 8 Office through email or by phone at 817-392-8808. Onward and Upward!

Affordable housing development opens in South Fort Worth with 252 new units

Posted Oct. 13, 2010

The NRP Group in partnership with the Fort Worth Housing Authority have come together to open Woodmont Apartment Homes, an affordable housing community. The new development is located approximately five miles south of downtown Fort Worth and marks the first affordable housing development to open near the central business district in the last two years.

The 252-unit development - located off I-35 south - offers residents the choice of one, two, three or four bedroom floor plans. The footprint also includes an exercise facility, play areas for children and a community pool. In addition, this new neighborhood is located convenient to Fort Worth ISD schools as well as accessible to The T and retailers and grocers. Woodmont marks the first of three housing communities in the Fort Worth housing market over the next five years for The NRP Group.

Councilmember Kathleen Hicks said she’s proud of this new development in an important part of Fort Worth that’s ripe for new develpoment.

“I am especially excited of the public/private partnership between the City of Fort Worth, NRP Group and the Fort Worth Housing Authority,” said Hicks. “It is partnerships like these that make all the difference in realizing projects that add to the renaissance of District 8.”

Financial partners involved in the apartment community included Bank of America, Oak Grove Capital and Stewart Title. The property was designed and engineered by Alamo Architects and Bury + Partners (engineering firm). Other partners include Coats Rose and Novogradac & Company.

“Woodmont appeals to a segment of people who work in or around downtown and need affordable housing options,” said Dan Markson, The NRP Group Senior Vice President. “The NRP Group is excited about its future in the Fort Worth market and looks forward to becoming a community partner in the growth and advancement of this thriving area.”

Statement from Councilmember Kathleen Hicks regarding the Medical Examiner's ruling in the Michael Jacobs, Jr. case:

“Our community is extremely saddened by the loss of this young man’s life. We can’t begin to imagine the suffering his family has endured since the day of this terrible tragedy. I am glad the medical examiner has finally concluded his investigation, and I believe the grand jury will be able to make a final and unbiased decision on where this case goes from here. The Fort Worth Police Department has a long history of brave and professional service to people of Fort Worth. We will continue to monitor this case closely to make sure—at the conclusion of this investigation—Chief Halstead and his staff take the actions necessary to prevent this from happening again.”

Cobb Park Master Plan

For far too many years, Cobb Park (one of the largest parks in Fort Worth) has remained mostly untouched. But that's all about to change. After a diligent review by a citizen's advisory committee chaired by Mayor Pro Tem Kathleen Hicks, the Fort Worth Parks Board adopted the master plan in June of 2008. The master plan includes more than $25 million worth of improvements to the park. Phase I of the design and construction will begin this year, starting with a new park road.
