Online Databases FAQ

Who can access the online databases?

Anyone with a Fort Worth Library resident borrower’s card in “good standing” may access the databases. If issued a Fort Worth Library card through the TexShare program, you may use the card to access the TexShare databases.

What does “a library card in good standing” mean?

Your card must be current, with less than $5.00 in fines or fees.

When I try to access the databases, I’m being asked for a username & PIN or password.

If you select a database from any of the lists and are asked for a username and PIN, it may be because your PC security and/or virus software are not allowing cookies to be placed on your PC. When you type in your library card number, our server verifies that you are a patron in good standing and places a temporary cookie on your PC so that the database’s server will know you are an authorized user.

If you know that your PC accepts cookies, the problem could be with the vendor’s server. In that case, we will have to contact them to correct it. If the problem continues, please e-mail us. Be sure to tell us the name of the database and the error message you’re getting.

After I enter my barcode, I get the error message, “If you do not connect to the resource you requested, close this window and click the back arrow on your browser to return to the list of databases.”

If you get this message, you need to temporarily disable your pop up blocker program because the database has to be able to open up in a new window. Some Internet providers and search engines, such as Google and Yahoo, have built in pop up blockers that you may not be aware of.

How do I enter my library barcode?

You must enter your entire barcode, without spaces or punctuation (e.g. 21668123451234).

When I enter my library card number, it says I can’t access the databases because I have overdue items.

You can check your account at My Account, then contact any Fort Worth Library to resolve the overdue fines or pay your fines online.

What if the database I want doesn’t connect?

There may be times when certain databases either connect very slowly or won’t connect at all. Please try again later. If the problem continues, please e-mail us. Be sure to tell us the name of the database that isn’t connecting and what error message you’re getting.

How do I get back to the list of databases after I finish with one?

This software opens the database in a new window, so just close that window and select the next database.

Do I have to type my library barcode number in every time I choose a new database from the list?

This software places a temporary cookie on your hard drive so that you don’t have to keep entering your barcode each time. The temporary cookie expires 20 minutes after you stop using the databases. However, if you have cookies turned off, you will be asked to re-enter your barcode each time.
