City of Fort Worth Pound Book

History

A city ordinance made it unlawful for any person to allow a large animal to run at large in any alley, street or highway or to be staked out in unenclosed lots or commons. Any law officer or citizen of Fort Worth was authorized to impound the animal and deliver it to the city poundkeeper, who was to fine the owner or to sell the unclaimed animal to the highest bidder.

This record was in the possession of the City Secretary until it was transferred to the library in 1996.

Scope and Contents Note

This record dates from 1894 - 1902 and shows stray animals impounded by the city poundkeeper. It provides information on the kind of animal, color, age, branch, ear marks, who impounded, charges, date sold, and amount.
