First Methodist Church Collection

History

In 1853, the First Methodist Church was founded in Fort Worth with Reverend John W. Chalk as the pastor. Services were held irregularly in the homes of members until a frame structure was built on Fourth and Jones Streets. Later a brick church was built at the same site. In 1908, a new church building was erected at Seventh and Taylor Streets. The current building, a massive Gothic structure, was completed in 1930 on West Fifth Street.

One of the largest churches in Fort Worth, its membership has included many prominent Fort Worthians such as the late Mayor Willard Barr, John Justin of Justin Boots, and Earl Cox of Stripling and Cox Department Stores.

Provenance

The First Methodist Church materials were gathered by a historical committee for the purpose of display in 1976. They were donated to the library by the church in 1994. They do not represent the official records of the congregation. Since 1994, other items have been added by members.
