Hazel Vaughn Leigh Papers

Biography

Hazel Vaughn Leigh (1897-1995) was the founder of the Fort Worth Boys Club in 1935 and devoted her life to improving the quality of life for boys in Fort Worth and Tarrant County. After retiring as executive director of the Boy’s Club in 1972, Mrs. Leigh continued to raise funds to support the Club. Among her many awards is the 1992 Pioneer Award granted by the Fort Worth Commission on the Status of Women. Following Mrs. Leigh’s death in 1995, J’Nell Pate wrote Hazel Vaughn Leigh and the Fort Worth Boys’ Club using documentation from the Hazel Vaughn Leigh Papers held in the Fort Worth Public Library Archives.

Provenance

Fort Worth Public Library was deeded the Hazel Vaughn Leigh Papers in 1992. Materials included in the collection are Mrs. Leigh’s family history; the history of the Fort Worth Boy’s Club; records of the Fort Worth Boy’s Club Council, Fort Worth Boy’s Club Endowment Fund records and Fort Worth Boys’ Clubs of America; fiscal and membership records; scrapbooks; photographs; memorabilia; and architectural drawings. The collection consists of 55 boxes of archived materials and was organized over a series of years by various staff members.

Scope and Contents Note

  • Series I : Biography - The Biography series contains a personal biography; correspondence; speeches and articles by Mrs. Leigh; membership cards; education documentation; newspaper clippings; and family photographs.
  • Series II : Fort Worth Boy’s Club - Materials included in the Fort Worth Boy’s Club series are the constitution and by-laws; meeting minutes; history of the merger of the Panthers Boy’s Club; state charters; wage and salary reports; building expansion reports; membership lists; properties records; and fiscal records.
  • Series III : Photographs - Photographs in the series are of sports activities; award presentations; the Fort Worth Boy’s Club building; club activities; and an alphabetical list of individuals.
  • Series IV : Clippings - The clippings series contains newspapers clippings relating to the Fort Worth Boy’s Club and its history and activities.
  • Series V : Fort Worth Boy’s Club Council - The Fort Worth Boy’s Club Council series contains a history of the Council; membership lists; fiscal records; Panther Boy’s Club newspaper clippings; photographs; property documents; and yearbooks.
  • Series VI : Endowment Fund - The Fort Worth Boy’s Club Endowment Fund series includes fiscal records; meeting minutes; articles of dissolution; lease agreements and sales; Fort Worth Boy’s Club, Inc. vs. Fort Worth Boy’s Club Council, Inc.; and Fort Worth Boy’s Club, Inc. vs. Fort Worth Boy’s Club Endowment Fund, Inc. et al.
  • Series VII : Boys’ Clubs of America - Materials in the Boys’ Clubs of America series include publications; national convention documents; annual reports; booklets; and certificates.
  • Series VIII : Books - Books included in the series include 100 Years and Millions of Boys; The Boy’s Club; William Pinckney McLean; and Hazel Vaughn Leigh and the Fort Worth Boy’s Club along with manuscript materials and photograph negatives for the book.
  • Series IX : Album / Scrapbooks - Included in the series are an album and scrapbooks with photographs and newspaper clippings documenting Fort Worth Boy’s Club history.
  • Series X : Awards / Plaques - Awards and plaques in the series include Fort Worth Boy’s Club honors and personal achievements awarded to Hazel Vaughn Leigh.
  • Series XI : Memorabilia - Memorabilia in the collection consists of a football helmet; silver mugs; woodshop projects; an award clock; Fort Worth Boy’s Club dolls; and miscellaneous items.
  • Series XII : Architectural Drawings / Maps - The architectural drawings are of the Fort Worth Boy’s Club and expansion efforts; Fort Worth Boy’s Club Eagle Mountain camp cabins; and various miscellaneous drawings. Maps include Fort Worth Boy’s Club area boundaries membership documentation and location of the Panther Boy’s Club.
  • Series XIII : Oversize - Oversize items include sketches of Hazel Vaughn Leigh; her marriage certificate; and various photographs.
