Sam B. Cantey III was born in Fort Worth in 1914. He was the son of Sam Cantey, Jr. and grandson of Sam Cantey, Sr., both well-known Fort Worth attorneys. He graduated from Culver Military Academy and Washington and Lee University. He began collecting art while he was a student. He became involved in banking and eventually became a vice-president of the First National Bank. He was a board member, past president and acquisition committee chairman of the Fort Worth Art Association and a member of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce’s Fine Arts Committee. He was involved in a wide range of charitable and artistic organizations. He died November 4, 1973, in Mexico.
The collection was donated prior to 1991.
Scope and Contents Note
The collection consists of two boxes of documents primarily about various Fort Worth artists such as Stuart Gentling, Amy Freeman Lee, and Blanche McVeigh.
