May 15: Nicholas Payton Trio
New Orleans-born Grammy-winning trumpeter is widely considered one of the greatest artists of our time. Featuring bassist Braylon Lacy and drummer Adonis Rose.
June 19: Pamela York Quartet
Lay Down this World: Hymns, Spirituals and Blues
Houston-based pianist explores the jazz possibilities of timeless, traditional spiritual music. Featuring saxophonist Shelley Carrol.
July 17: Freddie Jones Quintet
Jazz, Funk and Smooth – Rolled Into One
Composer, producer and trumpeter performs pieces inspired by the likes of Miles, Freddie Hubbard and Stevie Wonder. Let’s get groovin’!
Aug. 21: Clyde George Quintet
The Soulful, Blues-infused Jazz of Organist Jimmy Smith
Vocalist Victor Cager and saxophonist Mack Goldsbury join George as he cranks up the Hammond B-3 organ for a blend of 60s soul, blues and jazz.
Sep. 18: Shelley Carrol Quartet
Transcendence: Coltrane’s A Love Supreme
Tenor saxophonist, Shelley Carrol, performs the music of John Coltrane, including his masterwork, “A Love Supreme.”
The series kicks off in May and continues through September. All shows will be held monthly at 6:30 p.m. in the Gallery of the Central Library, 500 W. 3rd Street. Parking is free on the streets and in the 3rd Street garage after 6 p.m.
