Fort Worth residents have a long history of doing the right thing, especially when it comes to leadership on civil and human rights. Our city’s protection of housing rights for all people is just one example. April — Fair Housing Month — provides an opportunity to remind ourselves why we uphold the principles of fair housing.
Fort Worth is more culturally diverse than at any other time in its history. This diversity is one of our city’s greatest assets. Diversity makes neighborhoods stronger. Diversity is also a part of any strong economy. The ability for businesses to meet the needs of America’s diverse consumer groups is often the difference between success and failure.
And if you don’t think home ownership is important to a city, think again. Expanding homeownership must be about opening new doors and realizing opportunity for all residents and all communities. According to the National Association of Realtors, every home purchased pumps $60,000 into the economy for furniture, home improvements and related items.
I hope you’ll join me and the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission as we observe April as Fair Housing Month in Fort Worth. To learn more about the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance or to report a possible civil rights violation, call 817-392-7525 or visit the Human Relations Unit website.
