The urban village extends north and south of Berry Street along Hemphill Street.

Streetscape improvements are under construction on Hemphill Street from Bowie to Devitt streets, excluding the intersection of Hemphill and East Berry.

Improvements include new sidewalks, curb and gutters, textured concrete, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, irrigation, pavement enhancements, and public art-enhanced benches and trash receptacles.

Here’s the latest progress report on the project:

  • The contractor has completed excavation for pedestrian lights on the east side of Hemphill Street and pouring the light foundations.
  • Irrigation system piping has been installed.
  • The contractor is ordering light poles and completing the irrigation system.
  • Sidewalk forms and fill on the east side of Hemphill Street are being installed.
  • Excavation for street lights on the west side of Hemphill Street and coordination of the stormwater inlets will follow after the east side of the street is finished.

This project is part of the revitalization effort for the Hemphill/Berry Urban Village and the surrounding neighborhoods and businesses. The project is in Council District 9.

The project is expected to be completed toward the end of April.
