No discrepancies found in Waste Management's audit of Fort Worth recycling processes

The City of Fort Worth was recently informed by Waste Management about results of an internal audit of the company’s Lewisville-based hauling district. About 19 percent of recyclable materials were taken to the Lewisville landfill instead of being recycled between May 2014 and January 2016.

Waste Management has since audited operations in Fort Worth and Dallas and did not find the same discrepancies.

Fort Worth’s Code Compliance/Solid Waste Services manages the city’s waste hauling contract with Waste Management.

Procedures have been built in to daily, weekly and monthly operations to preclude these types of issues. For example:

  • Bi-monthly operational meetings are held between the city and Waste Management.
  • The city reviews tickets for all solid waste disposal and recycling loads, including curbside collections and drop-off stations.
  • The city receives reports for daily route completions.
  • The city’s Southeast Landfill is managed by Republic Services, a separate company, which ensures a third entity is involved in day-to-day operations and monitoring.

Residents who experience service problems or who observe waste and recycling being collected together should report the situation immediately by calling 817-392-1234.
