Imagine the Seventh Street Bridge lights turning purple on a TCU game day, or red white and blue for the Fourth of July.

That could be reality soon, a result of lighting upgrades to the two-year-old bridge.

Problems with two lighting systems — the arch lighting and the street lighting in the median — have resulted in electrical shorts during periods of heavy rainfall. Plans call for replacing the current lighting fixtures and cables with marine-grade components and energy-saving LED fixtures that can be programmed to change colors for seasonal events.

Funding for these improvements will come from savings on the project that were returned to the city by the Texas Department of Transportation, which partnered on the project. The bridge came in under budget, and the city was reimbursed about $1.8 million for its part of the savings.

The lighting improvements are expected to take place over the next several months.
