Vehicle-for-hire ordinance update to be discussed March 11

City officials are proposing ways to streamline regulations on vehicle-for-hire businesses, which would give passengers and businesses more service options.

Among the proposed changes are provisions that make vehicle-for-hire companies responsible for conducting background checks on their drivers, as well as requiring the companies provide proof of necessary vehicle maintenance before receiving permission to operate. Under current regulations, the city handles background checks and maintenance verification for traditional vehicle services like taxis and limos, but the new rules would put similar requirements on services different business models, such as Uber and Lyft.

City Council received a briefing on the changes March 1, and stakeholders are invited to learn more at an informational meeting, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. March 11 at the James Avenue Service Center, 5001 James Ave., in TPW training room 314.
