Turning manure into valuable compost

Ever wonder what happens to all the, um, animal droppings, left at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo?

Five years ago, the Stock Show set up an extensive recycling and composting program. Last year, more than 1,640 tons of used bedding was diverted from the landfill.

In the barns, bedding — straw or wood shavings — is kept separate from other waste. It is put in 300-gallon containers inside the barns, then forklifts pick them up and take them to roll-off dumpsters. After being transported offsite, the animal bedding and manure are blended with yard trimmings from area homeowners and turned into compost.

In addition to collecting materials from the Stock Show, Mayer Materials of Azle accepts manure and bedding, brush and yard trimmings for a nominal fee from Fort Worth residents and businesses. The company also sells fully cured compost, infused with beneficial microbes, in bulk and bags.
