Animal shelter cools off dogs in time for summer

Shelter dogs — and their human helpers — will benefit from two new Portacool evaporative coolers during the dog days of summer.

With temperatures starting to heat up, the Fort Worth Animal Shelter recently received a generous donation of two new outdoor coolers to help keep the dogs healthy and happy while they’re at the shelter. The donation came from Portacool LLC, one of the shelter’s newest partners and a company with a strong belief in social responsibility.

The Cyclone 160 evaporative coolers cool more than 2,100 square feet each and will be used in the outdoor play areas, which can quickly heat up in the summertime. The shelter now has 14 separate play areas, and providing cooling in these areas is vital. As Texas temperatures rise above 85°F, dogs can quickly become susceptible to the risk of heat stress.

“We commend the efforts of the Fort Worth Animal Care & Control team to create an environment that fosters healthy, adoptable animals waiting to find new homes,” said Misty Wilburn, marketing manager for Portacool. “In the hot months, keeping dogs cool can be a challenge when they are outside. We are thrilled to help maintain a cool space for the animals that allows for outdoor time without inducing heat stress.”

The shelter takes in more than 17,000 unwanted and stray dogs and cats annually. Every pet has a story — often one of being abandoned and left to survive on the streets. It’s the goal of the shelter to provide a healthy and safe environment until a loving and forever home can be found for each of these pets.
