Saturday evenings will be action-packed as the Code Blue After Dark basketball league begins play in June.

Fort Worth’s former midnight basketball league, now called Code Blue After Dark, is returning after a 12-year hiatus.

Designed to provide a constructive outlet for young adults, the league will start at 6 p.m. June 3 at Sycamore Community Center, 2525 E. Rosedale St. Mayor Betsy Price, Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald and other dignitaries will launch the nine-week competitive league and honor Basketball Hall of Fame coach Robert Hughes.

Code Blue After Dark is a partnership between the Fort Worth Police Department, Fort Worth After 6, Fort Worth Park and Recreation, The Firm Basketball Program, and Fort Worth’s Code Blue program.

League president Tracy Carter said the league will have an educational and motivational component. “As was done in the past, the Code Blue After Dark Basketball League will start each game with positive educational moments for the young adults and will strengthen the relationship between the players and police as well as other positive adults. We want the young adults to have a well-rounded experience.”

Historically, the Code Blue league has involved hundreds of local youth and young adults on basketball teams from across DFW.

“This league has seen many of its players go on to college and graduate to lead productive lives, and several have even made it to the NBA after having played in the Code Blue League,” said Nelson Rowls, a Fort Worth Park and Recreation supervisor and the league’s commissioner.

Weekly play will continue from 6-11 p.m. Saturdays through July 29 at the Sycamore Community Center.
