Since 2011, Fort Worth has been listed by the Federal Highway Administration as a focus city due to a high number of pedestrian fatalities. In fact, one out of four traffic fatalities in Fort Worth involves a pedestrian.

Late last year, at the request of Mayor Betsy Price and the Fort Worth Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Commission, the Fort Worth Safe Communities Coalition’s Road Safety Task Force and the Blue Zones Project joined forces to create a street safety initiative.

Residents are encouraged to attend a street safety education forum to help create an educational campaign leading to safer streets for all. The forum will be at 6 p.m. May 18 at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, 3220 Botanic Garden Blvd.

Amanda Robbins, co-chair of the Safe Communities Coalition, said education efforts in Fort Worth to address safety among pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles have been disjointed. This effort aims to correct that.

Objectives for a street safety education campaign in Fort Worth include:

  • Creating a consistent and meaningful campaign that increases safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
  • Reducing incidents involving pedestrians, bicycles and motor vehicles.
  • Engaging and collaborating with interested city, regional and community groups.
