Historic Rockwood Park Golf Course set to open after major renovation

The historic Rockwood Park Golf Course will celebrate its public grand opening at 10 a.m. June 30, complete with an official first shot by longtime Rockwood advocate Louis Ayala.

The course recently underwent a $5.1 million renovation, which includes new fairways, greens, tees, cart trails, sand bunkers and updated irrigation systems.

“Rockwood is basically a brand new course,” said Nancy Bunton, assistant director over the Park & Recreation Department’s golf division. “Everything has grown in very nicely, and we’re looking forward to showing off this beautiful new facility to the public.”

About Rockwood Park Golf Course

Rockwood Park Golf Course, which boasts sweeping views of the downtown skyline and the Trinity River, originally opened for play in September 1938. The original 18-hole course was designed by John Bredemus, and an additional nine holes designed by Ralph Plummer were added in 1963.

Colligan Golf’s latest redesign of the course expands the original Rockwood Park Golf Course from 6,350 to 7,053 yards — the fourth hole alone is 625 yards long. Elements of the course’s history remain, however: the rock bridge on the 13th hole is almost 80 years old, having been built by the Work Progress Administration as part of the New Deal.

The course incorporates three species of grass into its design. The greens are Tif-Eagle grass, the fairways and tees are 419 Bermuda grass, and the roughs are Tifton Ten turf.

Additionally, Rockwood Golf Course is home to the First Tee of Fort Worth, a nonprofit organization that teaches kids life skills and values through the sport of golf.

Funding for the Rockwood Park Golf Course renovations was approved by the Fort Worth City Council in 2015. Funding included $2 million from the 2014 Bond Program Proposition 2, while $3 million was composed of general gas revenue.

The Rockwood Study Committee was created in 2014, and was instrumental in assisting with the design and funding of the new course.
