Mayor and City Council appoint new task force for race and culture

At the City Council Special Called Meeting this afternoon, City Council approved the formation of a Race & Culture Task Force.

This task force will be led by co-chairs Lillie Biggins, Rabbi Andrew Bloom, Rosa Navejar and Bob Ray Sanders. They will be taking a leadership role in forming the task force and deciding on next steps.

The main responsibility of the task force will be to appoint other members and to hold a series of community conversations about race and culture, to draw conclusions from these conversations, and to make appropriate recommendations to the City Council. Once the community meetings are scheduled, the group will work with local organizations and neighborhoods to let residents know how they can get involved.

These conversations will complement the internal work of collecting and analyzing data to determine where racial and cultural disparities might exist. Estrus Tucker, an independent consultant and former chair of the Fort Worth Human Relations Commission, and Leon Andrews, director of the Race, Equity and Leadership (REAL) Initiative with the National League of Cities, will also be assisting with the task force.

“As a Council, we all look forward to working with these community leaders as we engage residents in healthy conversations about race and culture,” said Mayor Betsy Price. “Bringing true cultural and racial understanding to Fort Worth is incredibly important work that will not happen overnight. However, I am confident in the leadership abilities of these four co-chairs, along with Estrus Tucker, to lead us toward strategies that advance racial and cultural equity in our community.”
