The Citizens’ Fire Academy is accepting applications for a class that will be held Sept. 19-Nov. 14 in weekly classes. Deadline for applying is Sept. 5.

Established in 1995, the Citizens’ Fire Academy uses curriculum and teaching methods similar to those at the professional fire academy, but students will not be candidates for professional firefighting. Class members tend to be a cross-section of the Fort Worth community: homemakers, professional business people, retirees and neighborhood watch members who are eager to learn about the operation of the Fort Worth Fire Department.

Participants will become more familiar with the day-to-day operations of the department. Graduates can then choose to participate in future activities, such as Fourth of July operations and neighborhood fire patrols.

The training includes both classroom and practical instruction. Class members will meet in three-hour sessions weekly and will cover topics such as:

  • Firefighter selection process.
  • Fire safety education.
  • Fire communications.
  • Water rescue.
  • Fire prevention.
  • Code enforcement.
  • Fire investigation.
