A new school year is almost upon us, and a Fort Worth community center is doing its part to see that local kids start their first day in the classroom on the right foot.

Andrew “Doc” Session Community Center, 201 S. Sylvania Ave., is hosting a Back to School Bash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. Families will be able to pick up backpacks full of school supplies for their children, get them free haircuts and take care of other back-to-school basics. The event will include prize giveaways and other entertainment.

Applications for school uniforms will also be accepted at the Back to School Bash, but those applying are asked to bring an ID, proof of income, or a food stamp/benefits letter.

History

The Andrew “Doc” Session Community Center first began hosting a back-to-school event in 2007 as part of a partnership with United Riverside Neighborhood Association and the United Riverside Rebuilding Corporation. The first event only served about 120 kids in the surrounding neighborhood.

Since then, the Back to School Bash has drawn several new sponsors and now provides school supplies to 350 children across Fort Worth. Thanks to a partnership with Frost Bank, the event also provides school uniforms as well.

This year’s sponsors include the City of Fort Worth, Frost Bank, Pepsico, United Riverside Neighborhood Association, Atmos Energy, Five Star/Cargill, Fort Worth Community Credit Union, Local 440, K104, the Fort Worth Police Department and Fort Worth Police Officers Association, Mr. Vernell Sturns, Chipotle and Jimmy John’s.

Over the years, many private citizens have also donated and served as volunteers for the event.

“This Back to School Bash is a great opportunity for us to work together as a community to help prepare our kids to excel in the classroom, especially those whose families may not be able to afford school supplies and other basic essentials,” says District 8 Councilmember Kelly Allen Gray. “The event is instrumental in making sure that Fort Worth’s children start off the school year equipped for success.”
