The staff of the nonprofit Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) will begin managing education and volunteer programs for the city-owned Fort Worth Botanic Garden.

The City Council approved a $192,000 contract with BRIT, which is housed adjacent to the Botanic Garden on North University Drive.

The collaboration between the two entities will fulfill the public purpose of increasing community awareness of both organizations and providing visitors with access to the rich botanical resources in the garden’s living collection and the scientific collection at BRIT.

The collaborative program will begin after a strategic process is completed next spring.

BRIT was incorporated in 1987 as a nonprofit organization to house the Southern Methodist University herbarium, consisting of 450,000 specimens and its botanical library with 75,000 volumes.

The Fort Worth Botanic Garden, the oldest botanic garden in Texas, has more than 100 acres of gardens and landscaped pathways.
