Botanic Garden rededicates revamped rose garden

The design of the Rose Ramp was influenced by Italian gardens, and the vista was influenced by the garden at the French palace at Versailles.

Eighty-four years to the day after it was initially dedicated, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s historic rose garden was rededicated.

A garden revamp had been in the plans for years, but the schedule was moved forward in 2015 due to the rapid spread of rose rosette disease, a highly contagious rose disease that seriously affects plant health, reduces blooms and ultimately causes death. Infected roses throughout the Oval Rose Garden, Republic of Texas Rose Garden and Lower Rose Garden were removed and replaced.

Irrigation improvements were made, and the Rose Ramp was replanted with seasonal plantings that provide a spectacular show. Ten 200-gallon magnolias and a 200-gallon live oak were planted on either side of the ramp.

Ralph Duesing, a Dallas architect, created a new, formal design for the rose garden, and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden staff implemented that design.
