Trail Drive extension to get underway soon

Representatives of the city, county and school district celebrate the upcoming construction of an extension to Trail Drive in the Cultural District.

Confetti cannons signaled the start of construction on an alternative for motorists trying to navigate the Cultural District and the West Seventh corridor.

Since the 1990s, the city has engaged in discussions about traffic-flow challenges around West Seventh Street, University Drive and West Lancaster Avenue. The challenges have intensified with new development.

By combining public assets from the Fort Worth Independent School District, the city and Tarrant County, mobility in the area will now be improved. This will be accomplished by building a street connecting West Lancaster Avenue to Trail Drive.

Trail Drive currently runs south of the Will Rogers Memorial Center livestock barns from Montgomery Street to University Drive. A proposed eastern extension, about one-third mile long, will merge with West Lancaster Avenue at Currie Street, allowing motorists to access attractions in the West Seventh neighborhood.

The new road will cross the Farrington Field parking lot, running north and south, which required FWISD to grant an easement for a dedicated roadway to the city.

The road extension will help drivers avoid busy intersections — and long traffic lights — on University, West Lancaster and West Seventh Street.

Constructing the road requires relocating the city’s Park and Recreation maintenance facilities at the north end of Trinity Park. This change will open as many as nine acres of additional usable park land and improve access to the Van Zandt Cottage, a city-owned historic landmark.

Construction impacts

Reconstruction of the Lancaster Avenue intersection at Currie Street requires Currie Street access at Lancaster Avenue to be closed beginning in March 2018 and ending in July 2018.

Currie Street will remain open; however, there will be no access to Lancaster Avenue during this time. Additionally, Lancaster Avenue will remain open with at least one lane in each direction.

Trail Drive from University Drive to West Lancaster Avenue will be constructed as a two-lane undivided roadway with sidewalks, street lights and intersection improvements.

Van Zandt Lane is a new two-lane roadway that is being constructed from Trail Drive to Foch Street.

Project construction begins Feb. 26, 2018. Watch for more information about an upcoming community meeting that is slated before the start of construction.
