Lots of gift shipments? Remember to recycle all that cardboard

Posted Nov. 28, 2017

A box for a new flat-screen TV can be broken down or taken as is to a drop-off station.

With Cyber Monday behind us, can you imagine how many shipping boxes are in the process of being delivered? Increasingly, cardboard is becoming a huge part of recycling — for both residences and at businesses.

Remember to recycle all that cardboard. Nearly 70 percent of all corrugated cardboard is recovered for recycling, making it the largest source of waste paper collected for recycling. Today more than 90 percent of all products in the U.S. are shipped in corrugated cardboard boxes.

Cardboard does not go in the bulk trash collections.

If the cardboard boxes are too large to fit into the blue recycling cart, break the boxes down into smaller pieces. If they’re still too large to fit into the cart, take the boxes to one of the city’s four drop-off stations.

Samples of cardboard that can be recycled:

  • Gift boxes.
  • Shipping boxes from your online purchases.
  • Product packaging.
  • Large flat-screen television boxes.
