Registering for emergency text messages sent directly from the Fort Worth Fire Department’s Office of Emergency Management to your cellphone or email may be the easiest thing you do today.

While registration is as simple as texting a ZIP code, you may find your participation in the Nixle program to be a critical advantage in an emergency situation.

The Office of Emergency Management recommends all residents have access to a NOAA all-hazards weather radio as primary warning in a natural or man-made disaster. The office will also activate outdoor sirens to provide a warning of potential danger to all residents who are outside — but not everyone will be able to hear this warning, especially if they are inside a home or business.

The Office of Emergency Management sends emergency text messages directly to a cellphone or email through the Nixle/Everbridge system. As a Nixle participant, residents receive the alert wherever they can receive a cell signal, whether it’s inside a home, a noisy office or industrial plant, school, or a loud, crowded sporting event. This free service could be the difference between safely reaching shelter and being caught in the open.

To register, simply text the ZIP code for the area that you would like to receive the alerts to 888777. This will automatically register your cellphone for emergency alerts. Register for alerts for more than one ZIP code. The website allows you to choose multiple ZIP codes, the type of alert you want to receive such as emergency, advisory or community, and on what device you want to receive the alert.
