Leaks can run, but they can't hide when you participate in the fourth annual Chasing Leaks 5K.

The average American household wastes more than 10,000 gallons each year from easy-to-fix water leaks. Across the country, household leaks can add up to more than 1 trillion gallons of water lost every year.

The City of Fort Worth is partnering with the Fort Worth Runners Club to host the fourth annual Chasing Leaks 5K run on March 17. The event kicks off Fix a Leak Week and raises awareness about the importance of fixing household leaks.

Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. at Trinity Park Pavilion No. 1, 2300 W. Seventh St., adjacent to the Police and Firefighters Memorial. Race-day registration is $25, but you can save $5 by preregistering.

The event includes a free 1K kids fun run at 7:45 a.m., the 5K run at 8 a.m. and a free 5K fun walk at 10 a.m. There will also be booths, music, giveaways, demonstrations and more.

About Fix A Leak Week

Fix A Leak Week, the third week in March, is an annual reminder to check household plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems for leaks. Common types of leaks include worn toilet flappers, dripping faucets and leaking showerheads. All are easily correctable.

Fixing leaks saves water and reduces water utility bills by about 10 percent. Start saving today with these leak-detection tips:

  • A good way to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It’s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • One way to find out if you have a toilet leak is to place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within 10 minutes without flushing, you have a leak. Be sure to flush immediately after this experiment to avoid staining the tank.
