Retired DFW Airport Chief Tom Shehan, left, presents the recognition certificate to Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald.

The Fort Worth Police Department has been honored by the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation’s recognition program, a voluntary process that requires police agencies to comply with 168 law enforcement best practices.

The recognition means that an agency meets all of the identified best practices for Texas law enforcement, including use of force, protection of citizen rights, pursuits, property and evidence management, and patrol and investigative operations. The recognition program assures residents that their police department is operating in a way that reflects current law enforcement practices.

Fort Worth is the largest city in Texas to achieve the recognized status.

A committee of police chiefs and command-level officers developed standards for proper functioning of Texas law enforcement agencies. The committee reviewed Texas law and other state accreditation program standards to determine which standards were most appropriate for the program.

The recognized status is valid for four years. FWPD must submit an annual report and show continued compliance with performance-related standards.
