Fort Worth residents with a functional need — deaf, hard of hearing, blind or deaf/blind — may find themselves in dangerous situations during severe weather. When the city activates its outdoor warning system and sends emergency text alerts to warn residents about potential severe weather or man-made hazards, residents with hearing or sight special needs may not be able to receive those warnings.

Fort Worth offers the Accessible Hazard Alert System, a visual alert in American Sign Language, captioned text in English and Spanish, spoken word and refreshable Braille.

Residents with an auditory functional need will need an electronic video-capable device such as a cellphone or email to receive the alerts. Blind residents will need a refreshable Braille reader to print warnings.

The free alerts are accessible to all residents using Fort Worth ZIP codes. To register, visit Fort Worth AHAS online.
