Two City of Fort Worth employees received the Community Impact Award from Blue Zones Project.

Jahn

Brian Jahn

Brian Jahn, engineering manager in the Transportation & Public Works Department, has served on the Blue Zones Project Built Environment Committee since its inception four years ago. His leadership helped advance priorities identified by community stakeholders, such as a Safe Routes to School application and award of $3.2 million, with a match from the city to total $6.4 million; working to improve the city's Complete Streets and Living Streets programs; and the Street Safety Education Campaign.

Burghdoff

Dana Burghdoff

Dana Burghdoff, assistant director of planning, has co-chaired the Blue Zones Project Built Environment Committee since its beginning in August 2014. She has advanced most, if not all of the priorities set forth by community partners to make Fort Worth a safer environment with increased connectivity. She also facilitated a conversation with the North Central Texas Council of Governments to secure funding for consultants to create an Active Transportation Plan, as well as ensuring that Complete Streets training is a required element in city staff training.

Besides the Community Impact Awards, Power 9 Awards went to Jocelyn Murphy and Wyndie Turpin for their work in “helping make Fort Worth and their community a happier, healthier place.”

Murphy, planning manager in the Planning & Development Department, helped write the urban agriculture ordinance and worked closely with the Tarrant County Food Policy Agriculture Workgroup and other community partners, such as beekeepers. She was open in her approach to remove barriers and to introduce aquaponics and urban farms in residential areas.

Wyndie Turpen, superintendent in Code Compliance, was instrumental in revising the mobile fresh market and produce cart ordinances to make it more appealing to sell produce in neighborhoods. She partnered with Blue Zones to create a card to distribute to grocery stores to educate workers on the benefits of donating produce.
