Jeff Kersey, a senior IT tech support analyst with the City of Fort Worth, received the Best of Texas Award for Demonstrated Excellence in Project Management from the Center for Digital Government.

Kersey managed a tremendously large network infrastructure upgrade project for data and telephony services for more than 6,000 city employees and countless numbers of patrons. This project, split into three smaller projects that ran concurrently, succeeded in all upgrades being done with little to no impact to users. Through his leadership ability, the team completed each project ahead of schedule while staying under budget.

Kersey was responsible for network architecture design and hands-on network configuration changes, scheduling, coordination and installation of a fiber ring that connected 66 key city locations — which increased bandwidth by 10 times or more — and provided much-needed path redundancy. His hard work and innovation in upgrading circuits led to the reliability at public safety locations increasing from 98.88 percent to 99.99 percent uptime. Not only has he increased customer satisfaction and interdepartmental communications, he has positively impacted public safety for all Fort Worth residents through the reliable and secure network that he helped to improve.

“This $14 million project is the backbone of the city providing the voice and data communication infrastructure for the vital services we all provide,” said Kevin Gunn, IT Solutions director. “Work in 200 facilities, 7,000 phones, replacing equipment in every data center and telecom closet across the city could potentially be very disruptive. But Jeff’s professionalism and hard work were instrumental in ensuring the success of this project, and this recognition is well-deserved.”

In its 17th year, the Best of Texas Awards program recognizes public-sector professionals and government organizations for their dedication and contributions through information technology to public service in Texas.
