The Como community joined city officials and area elementary students to break ground on the new Como Community Center.

The Como community is getting a new community center that will offer both youth and adult programming, fitness resources and meeting space. City officials joined Como residents to break ground on the project on Oct. 29.

After the new center is operational by fall 2019, the old building will be demolished.

Funded by the 2014 bond program and other sources, the center is expected to cost more than $12 million. Amenities in the 25,000-square-foot facility will include classrooms and activity rooms, a demonstration kitchen, computer lab, senior activity area, improved administrative offices, Community Action Partners social service office, fitness area, gymnasium, outdoor seating, a customer-friendly reception desk, increased special event space and a spacious lobby.

The original Como Community Center was built in 1970 and is located on Horne Street near West Vickery Boulevard. Its after-school program has been in existence for more than 20 years, and as many as140 students participate annually. Additionally, Como is the only community center in Fort Worth that has a track and field team, as well as peewee football and cheerleading leagues.

The center provides an evening meal program daily, a weekend food program and a mobile pantry in collaboration with Tarrant Area Food Bank. The center is a Community Action Partners site that assists low-income individuals.
