September was one of the wettest months on record in North Texas, and that resulted in a spike in the mosquito population.

The Consumer Health Division of Code Compliance monitors mosquito traps at 42 Fort Worth fire stations, in partnership with Tarrant County Public Health, for West Nile virus. Positive tests have been confirmed in several neighborhoods.

Code officers are responding to mosquito and standing water concerns and will continue to apply larvicide as warranted.

Residents should take precautions to reduce the risk of exposure to mosquitoes:

  • Use insect repellent that contains DEET when you’re outside.
  • Drain standing water in the yard and around the house.
  • Get rid of old tires, buckets or any containers that hold standing water, or empty them regularly.
  • Empty plastic wading pools and store them indoors or upside down when they’re not in use.
  • Change water in birdbaths and scrub them often.
  • Empty pets’ watering pans daily.
  • Clean clogged roof gutters.
