Police hope to put the Grinch Pinch on package thieves

A new program in effect this month aims to limit package thefts from porches.

During the holiday season, package thefts are a major issue in Fort Worth. To limit the number of package thefts, the Fort Worth Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center is operating a baited package program called Operation Grinch Pinch.

The plan involves packages provided by FWPD’s Electronic Surveillance Unit, cooperation from community members and daily monitoring of the baited packages by the Real Time Crime Center.

Residents chosen to participate in the program must have an active home video monitoring system with the ability to record activity 24 hours a day. Selected residents are briefed on the details of Grinch Pinch and will be required not to divulge that they are cooperating with law enforcement. Participants are asked to place a GPS-baited package on their front porch, clearly visible from the street.

Packages are “geo-fenced,” allowing officers to monitor the packages for movement outside of the target area. Once a package is moved from the target location, observers will notify patrol officers. If a package is recovered and the suspects responsible for the theft are taken into custody, the baited package will be recovered.

After the end of the Grinch Pinch period, crime analysts will determine the program’s effect on package thefts in Fort Worth.

Grinch Pinch began Dec. 1 and will conclude at the end of the year.
